Story time. Standing Up for My Daughter

As a parent, I faced a situation where my daughter's teacher insisted on using a Spanish version of her name despite her preference to be called by her proper name. This blog post explores the significance of respecting names and the impact it has on personal identity.

As a parent, we often find ourselves advocating for our children, ensuring their needs and preferences are respected.

Recently, I faced a situation where my daughter's teacher insisted on calling her by a German version of her name, despite her explicit request to be called by her proper name.

This sparked a conversation in our household about the significance of respecting names and the impact it has on personal identity.

Our daughter, Daniel, has always been clear about her name preference.

She dislikes any shortened version of her name and strongly identifies with the name Daniel.

This preference has been known to our family and close friends, and we have always respected it.

Daniel has also become adept at asserting herself when others address her with nicknames like Dani or Dan.

When Daniel began taking German classes in middle school, her teacher, expressed a desire to call students by the German version of their names, provided there was one.

Daniel made it clear to the teacher that she preferred to be called by her actual name, not the German version.

To our relief, the teacher respected her wishes throughout her three years in middle school.

However, the situation changed when Daniel started high school.

Her new German teacher, announced that she would call students by the German version of their names if applicable.

True to her word, she called Daniel "Daniela" during roll call.

Daniel politely corrected her, but to her dismay, the teacher brushed off her request.

After two weeks of enduring the incorrect name, Daniela came home upset.

As a mother, I felt the need to step in and address the issue, even though I typically refrain from intervening in my children's school matters.

I reached out to the teacher via email, expressing my concern and emphasizing the importance of respecting Daniel preferred name.

The teacher initially resisted, arguing that in a German-speaking country, Daniela would be called Alejandra.

She justified her stance by asserting that she was preparing students for that eventuality.

However, Daniel's previous middle school German teacher, who was actually from a German-speaking country, respected her preference without any issue.

I questioned the inconsistency in the teacher's reasoning.

If it was not a significant issue in her eyes to address Daniel as Daniela, why was it such a big deal to simply call her by her proper name?

After further discussion, the teacher finally relented and agreed to address Daniel as Daniel from that point forward.

Some may argue that I blew the situation out of proportion and that Daniel could have endured being called Daniela for a year.

However, this incident goes beyond a name preference.

It is about respect, validation, and acknowledging an individual's identity.

By standing up for my daughter and advocating for her preferred name, I taught her the importance of self-advocacy and asserting her own preferences.

Names hold significant meaning to individuals.

They reflect our cultural identity, family ties, and individuality.

Insisting on using the correct name not only demonstrates respect but also shows that we see and validate each person's unique identity.

It sends a powerful message that our identities should not be compromised or diminished for the sake of convenience or adherence to gender norms.

As parents, it is important for us to support and help our children navigate situations where their preferences are not being respected.

By doing so, we empower them to assert their own boundaries, advocate for themselves, and stand strong in their individuality.

Lesson learned for both of us

In conclusion, standing up for my daughter's preferred name was not a mere fuss over a minor issue.

It was an opportunity to teach her the value of asserting her own preferences, the importance of respect, and the significance of our individual identities.

Let us strive to validate and honor one another's names, ensuring that we create a world where personal identity is celebrated and respected.
